Oh Beauteous Rose!

Oh Beauteous Rose!

It’s June 21st tomorrow and the first day of summer.  Our roses are in full bloom now.  I have been captivated by their beauty and enjoy looking at them every day.  Being a budding photographer and naturalist, I couldn’t resist taking these pictures.  They’re all from the front garden.

Roses in June

My Dad wrote a poem called “Oh Beauteous Rose” which I will share with you.  He had a beautiful rose garden in the old country and enjoyed cultivating roses very much.   His love for flowers, and roses in particular, never waned.  He enjoyed our garden up to his last summer and this was written later in his life – in Canada.

 Oh beauteous Rose

Your ruby red

So velvety and soft

Your petals formed and arranged

To such perfection.

Your head held high

With your long and stately stem

Your fragrance fills the air

Your perfume exhilarates.

Symbol of beauty and purity

What is it that glistens on your petal

A dewdrop – or a teardrop?

Perhaps it’s mine

That soon you’ll leave

Your allure all behind

Your fragrance fade away

And your petals fall.

But should I be sad?

For when fresh spring is in the air

Will you not come back

To bloom for me again

Next year?

Roses in Pink

Seasons come and seasons go as they say. My Dad depicts this well in this poem.  Have a great summer!  Take time to smell the roses.
